A Black Sharpie, A Wall

We have a very old kitchen - the cabinets probably haven't been updated since 1946, when our house was built.  We'd love to renovate, and will do so someday, but it's out of our price range right now.  However, I am fairly bohemian in outlook.  The kitchen looked boring and sad to my two young kids.  So... I needed to fix it, right?

This was the first drawing I made on the side of one of our cabinets.  The paint was old and worn a bit, so I drew a tree to hide the bubbles in it.  Then I asked my four-year-old what went with the tree.  A bear, of course (after a reading of "Goldilocks").  And a bunny (after a reading of "Pat the Bunny").  And a campfire with marshmallows (after exploding marshmallows in the microwave... if you have kids, this is easy entertainment.  Marshmallows in a bowl, 10 seconds on the clock - and you have Stay Puft.  They love it).

Here is a work in progress.  The right side of the cabinet is finished - a little busy when looking at it from far away, but the kids kept on suggesting more and more things.  And when you're drawing with a Sharpie, you can't really take things away, even if you want to.  But the kids enjoy finding all the "hidden" fairies in the picture.

Here are some close-ups:
There are more pictures, but they're still in progress, and I'll post them when they're closer to finished.  I work on them a little at a time when I'm cooking dinner for the family and have a second in between chopping or stirring something.  That's when I pull down the Sharpie from the top of the fridge and add a little something.  So by the time we're ready to renovate our kitchen cabinets many, many years from now, they'll be covered with years and years of stories.
