The Dusty Springfield song "Wishing and Hoping" * was stuck in my mind today. It's a catchy song, but more than that, I started thinking about the lyrics. Doesn't it sum up exactly what writers do? We write, we edit, we send out our best stuff. Then we're stuck at home, hoping to find our perfect match. And we get a lot of rejection along the way.
Granted, writers do more than cross our fingers and hope for the best - at least, we do if we're serious about improving. We study our craft, chat with other writers and read, read, read. And then we write, write, write - throw away half of what we write, and then write some more. I write because I love it, first and foremost. But I must admit, I also write to get published. So I spend a lot of my time sitting at home "wishin' and hopin'."
